Ian is a preeminent scholar in the field of Disaster Management, and is affiliated with Oxford University, Kyoto University, Lund University and the United Nations. Originally an architect, Ian spent two decades researching and teaching architects and urban designers in Oxford. This ‘architectural period’ overlapped with the past 38 years, spent working internationally to either reduce disaster risk or manage the disaster recovery/ reconstruction process. He has written, or been editor of 11 books and is currently writing further books on ‘Shelter and Disaster Reconstruction’ and another on ‘Adaptation to Climate Change’. Ian contributed to Byron for nine years as a mentor, and now participates in an advisory role.
